Florida Hospital Zephyrhills takes on a new patient safety initiative

The physicians and nursing staff at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills have undertaken a new patient safety initiative on proper blood sugar/glucose management.  Over the past four years extensive research has been done about diabetic patients and the need for maintaining tighter controls on their blood sugar when the patient is hospitalized.  Sometimes due to a patients’ illness, their blood sugar has to be regulated with insulin when they are hospitalized.  This is even if a patient is diabetic and is not insulin dependant at home.  A normal blood sugar is between 80 -100.  Now with new controls in place our goal is to have the blood sugar level not to exceed 110 when the patient is in critical care.

The statistics on diabetes in America is astounding.

  • 20.8 million Americans have diabetes.
  • In 2005 there were 1.5million new cases.
  • 38% of Americans admitted to the hospital are diagnosed with diabetes.
  • 29% of these cases are cardiac patients.
  • The length of stay for a patient with diabetes is 1-3 days longer than a patient with the same diagnosis with out diabetes.

Florida Hospital’s goal is to educate 100% of the nursing staff and 90% of the medical staff on the new protocols on controlling blood sugars.  The new protocols will increase patient safety outcomes, decrease mortality and length of stay.  This initiative encompasses all entities of Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, including our home health agency Chapel Home Health.

Education began the third week of January and is set to be complete by the end of February.  The goal is to implement the protocol in the second quarter.  Monica Wills, Director ICU/PCU and Dr. Joseph Hubaykah are the nurse and physician champions that will be leading out in the project.  Wills states that the “staff is really excited about the project, because they have read the literature and research and can see the benefit in the new protocols.”

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills commitment to quality healthcare and the communities we serve is evident in our daily task.  To learn more about the blood sugar program or on diabetes management please contact Marketing at (813) 715-6625.
