Special Certifications

Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) Chest Pain Accreditation

The SCPC is a non-profit international society dedicated to the belief that heart disease can be eliminated as the number one cause of death worldwide.  Hospitals such as Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, who are Chest Pain Accredited by SCPC, notice improved quality outcomes and streamlined processes that enhance the quality of cardiac care.  Obtaining Chest Pain Accreditation also demonstrates to the community Florida Hospital Zephyrhills’ commitment and dedication to providing exceptional cardiac care.

The Emergency Department Staff

Our Emergency Department staff consists of registered nurses and physicians who are specially trained for emergency medicine.  Several of the nurses are members of the Emergency Nurse Association, a professional nursing association dedicated to emergency care through advocacy, expertise, innovation, and leadership.  All of the Emergency Department nurses and physicians are trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and work closely with the Cardiology team to rapidly identify and treat patients having a heart attack.  When it comes to taking action in the face of a crisis, our Emergency Department team works together as an extension of one another.  Their individual qualifications, specialties, training and real life experiences bring a unified strength to their care.  The daily ritual at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is caring for you!

What is an Emergency?

According to Webster’s Dictionary, an emergency is “an unforeseen situation calling for immediate action; a crisis.”   If you are having chest pain, respiratory distress, or uncontrolled bleeding, you should always call 911 to summon emergency medical assistance before coming to the Emergency Department.

What to Expect When You Arrive At Our Emergency Department

When you arrive, you will meet with our emergency triage staff that will assess your symptoms and decide which area within the Emergency Department your illness or injury can best be addressed.  Our triage nurse will check your vital signs; determine the severity of your condition, and the order in which you will be seen.  It is very important that the most seriously ill or injured patients be treated first.  Patients are not always seen on the basis of first come first served.  Factors that affect the order of being seen include severity of illness or injury, and availability of specialty beds and equipment.

You will be brought back to either our Rapid Medical Examination area or an acute care bed where you will be examined by an emergency physician, physician assistant or certified nurse practitioner.  Depending on your situation, we may order tests (such as x-rays, blood work, electrocardiogram), and your vital signs will be monitored.  After your testing or treatment has been performed, you may be directed to our Results Waiting Room while awaiting your test results.  This helps us to better serve all of our patients by opening examination areas for those who need to lay down for their testing or treatment.

Every effort is made to provide prompt care, but you may have to wait before you are seen by a medical professional.  There are a variety of reasons for this, but the most common reason is that other patients may need to be treated first due to a more serious injury or illness.  Procedures such as x-rays and laboratory tests may need to be obtained and reviewed by your health care team.  Your patience is always appreciated.

If your physician feels you will need and benefit from additional testing and/or care, you will be admitted into the Hospital.  Otherwise, he or she will discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan with you prior to discharge.  These may include medications, medical restrictions and possible follow up care.  After your questions are answered and you complete your discharge paperwork, you will be released from the Emergency Department.
